My silvertop was running down on power from time to time too afer I first put it in my AE92. After checking ECU codes, running in test mode then checking all sensors systematically and not finding anything, I decided I'd better check the ignition leads and distributor cap and rotor. I hadn't checked them earlier as it seemed to run smoothly - just down on power.
There was an oxide coating on the contacts inside the distributor cap and the resistance across them was quite high. I cleaned them up and then also found one plug lead open circuit!!! I had to order new leads (which took a few days to come in) so initially the only improvement was the cleaned up contacts inside the distributor cap. But the improvement was significant from that alone with a bit more improvement when the leads were finally replaced.
However, if yours is backfiring, it sounds like your timing is out to me.
Timing marks should be easy to see on front pulley.
