are you saying that to drive the car you have to hold the key beyond ON??? or this is only when starting the car and once warm all is good???

with the info given i can think of probably 10 possibilities so i would ask for more info as asked above

but in a nut shell it is more then likely electrical. are you running stock carby or twin side draughts?

if twin are they tuned/setup right in respect to air/fuel?
check coil - check voltage when car is on, see if it fluctuates heaps or not
ignition barrel - unscrew the ignition barrel and once out with a screw driver check that when you turn it to start it kicks back to ON. if it doesnt then internal spring stuffed. if it does kick/turn back automatically and car still turns off then could be the connections in the switch ar stuffed
other than checking fuses make sure there are no lose connections

so the only thing you have done recently is take the dash out and put it back in? was the problem there before hand? if so how long has it been happening... i would lean towards ign barrel issue but woth the backfire it means little spark getting through to burn the fuel
