3SGTE oil cooler/warmer

Howdy, I wanted to find out what people think of the oil cooler/warmer that the 3sgte uses?
Seems coolant passes through the base of the oil filter area. Would it be better to scrap this completely and use an external oil cooler?
Or is it a good system and should be kept?
