Never had a problem with doing so, and in fact it saved the engine once as the timing belt wore prematurely (not even 10,000km's) and I could see it was not too far away from breaking. I only run the bottom cover and that's to gt the timing marks alone, and I cut the bottom half of that away to let any gunk that gets into it fall out. Been like that for fifteen years.
