i've got 2 JL 12wo's that i'm quite happy with as they go quite well with rock/hip hop/druma and bass. i actually bought them 2nd hand for $250 through a mate who is assistant state rep off CAA who's link i posted before.
from what i've heard they have been one of the longest running range of subs which has got to say something about them.
my best advice is jump into different cars and listen to the products out there. other than that see what people with experience have to say and obviosly the more you spend the better quality you get.
I spent a bit on my audio gear as i always held the idea that when i sell a car i would take it out and put in my next car.

I've got a pair of JL 10wo's - I got mine 2nd hand for $250 too ! ! - I got a ported box and an amp in that price though 
I can TOTALLY recommend a pair of 10's over a single 12. Louder, tighter, as well as giving you wiring options to run a choice of resistance loads.
I searched for your amp's model code, came up with some of this:
To run a pair of 12" subs - "I have an Alpine MRV-F250 that would power those well. Stable at 2ohms and 375watts"
Another guy sez "My MRV-F250 is only rated at 4x25w and you'd be surprised at how loud it gets while staying clean." -That's running mids and tweeters though.
For Sale:
Alpine MRV-F250 V12
300W
4/3/2 channel amp
40watts RMS per channel
2x Rca in, 1x out
had running 2 x 12" subs
-From all that, I'd suggest that you run two pair of splits from that amp, and get a big-arsed bridgeable 2-channel amp for teh massif, hektic sub(s).
Assuming you're on a super-tight budget, run a pair of 10" subs off the alpine amp (bridged to 2 channels), and your full-range speakers off the head unit, till you can afford an amp for the subs. Then switch the MRV-F250 over to the full-range speakers.
I don't think you'll run a 12" sub too well off that amp, nor do I imagine you'd be happy with what a single 10" would put out. And yes, You can bridge to 3 channels to run 1 sub and 2 speakers, or to 2 channels and run 2 subs.
