I think Celica_John means that two wires / pins are crossed.
It is possible possible but unlikely that only two wires are used to connect the EMS to the computer.
It is possible for serial communcation to use only two wires (signal and signal ground)... e.g. USB which has only power, power ground, signal and signal ground but I think the computer would shit itself if it had to communicate via the serial port in this manner... this could be corrected by software but then this would be a lot of work to save using a few extra wires.
