it is not necessarily so that his guage reads mercury levels as the units of vacuum.
mmHg is simply another unit of pressure measurement. It is very common so see mmHg on boost/vacuum guages as this is the industry standard for manifold vacuum measurements.
Personally i think pressure guages should all be reading absolute pressure......

The mmHg is GENERALLY used as it gives a greater MOVEMENT on the needle then what kPA would...
