Re: check engine light Wed, 09 March 2005 19:25 Go to previous messageGo to previous message
Guys i checked the codes however i am unsure if i did it correctly (i think I did)

When i shorted T and E1 i get

4 flashes - short pause - 2 flashes - long pause

and repeat

Now I thought this meant a code 4 and a code 2. But then I found this on MR2OC.COM (see bold sentance)

ITA-MR2, Is the CEL codes for the 87 the same for the 85-86?

Here is how to check the code:

MKI ECU Diagnostic Codes

Diagnosis System: To obtain output, proceed as follows.
Initial conditions must be met for codes to appear in normal output.
1. Battery Voltage must be 11 volts or more
2. Throttle valves must be fully closed (throttle position sensor IDL points closed)
3. Transmission in neutral position
4. Accessories switched off
5. Engine at operating temperature

Turn the ignition switch ON. (Do not start engine)
Short terminals TE1 and E1 of the check connector of the diagnosis connector cluster.

Diagnostic Codes:

Normal System Operation: (no malfunction)
1985 - 86 The light will blink once every 4.5 seconds
1987 ?
1988 – 89 The light will blink once every 0.5 seconds.

Malfunction Codes Indication

1985 – 86 The light will blink a number of times equal to the malfunction code indication with a 2.5 second interval between each indication.

After the largest code has been indicated, there will be a 4.5 second pause followed by another repetition of the diagnostic code(s).

1988 – 89 The light will blink a number of times equal to the malfunction code indication as follows:
1. Between the first digit and second digit, 1.5 seconds
2. Between code and code, 2.5 seconds
3. Between all malfunction codes, 4.5 seconds.

NOTE: The diagnostic code series will be repeated as long as the check connector terminals T and E1 are shorted.
NOTE: In the event of a number of trouble codes, indication will begin from the smaller value and continue in order to the larger number.
1985 – 1986 4AGE
Code No.
1 Normal
2. Air flow meter
3. Ignition signal
4. Water temperature sensor
5. Oxygen sensor signal
6. RPM signal
7. Throttle position sensor
8. Intake temperature sensor signal
10. Starter signal
11. Switch signal

1988 – 1989 4AGE
Code No.
12. RPM signal
13. RPM signal
14. Ignition signal
21. Oxygen sensor signal/oxygen sensor heater
22. Water temperature sensor signal
24. Intake air temperature sensor signal
25. Air-fuel ratio lean malfunction
26. Air-fuel ratio rich malfunction
31. Air flow meter signal
41. Throttle position sensor signal
42. Vehicle speed sensor signal
43. Starter signal
51. Switch signal
71. EGR system malfunction

1988 – 1989 4AGZE
Code No.
11. ECU (+B)
12. RPM signal
13. RPM signal
14. Ignition signal
21. Oxygen sensor signal/oxygen sensor heater
22. Water temperature sensor signal
24. Intake air temperature sensor signal
25. Air-fuel ratio lean malfunction
26. Air-fuel ratio rich malfunction
31. Air flow meter signal
32. Air flow meter signal
41. Throttle position sensor signal
42. Vehicle speed sensor signal
43. Starter signal
51. Switch signal
52. Knock sensor signal
53. Knock control signal in ECU
71. EGR system malfunction

Now if i had a code 4 and a code 2 wouldnt it display the 2 code first and then the 4 code?? Am I actually getting a code 42??

Thanks
