Well I finally got under the car to check this out but I got worried. By adjusting the position of the lever on the bar using the slotted hole, the position of the switch actuator would move (which is what I want) but I worried the transmission would be affected as well. I worry that this might cause slippage or other transmission problems.
I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and get out the spanner, see what happens!
