Previous owner of mine did the same thing. Then stuck the gearknob back on with a bit of hope and spit. After 2 days of being sick of the knob coming off on downchanges I decided to fit a new knob. So after angle grinder treatment and the new knob fitted the whole thing broke off... 100 ks from home. 
Lucky for me my old man has a lathe and we could turn up an insert to take the new knob and fit inside the remnants of the original stick...
The whole thing seemed so cunning at the time, and so stupid now... nearly as stupid as the choice of a black metal gear knob for a car that lives outside in Australian summers
