Confused
not sure that ignites at lower temp.

if you say that there is more octane molecules in the higher octane fuel.....then it should theoretically take longer and need more energy for the octane to react with the air.

hypothetical situation;
STANDARD fuel: 50 octane molecules in 1 mL petrol
HIGH OCTANE fuel: 80 oc. molecules in 1 mL petrol

say it takes .1 second to combust 1 octane and air molecule......then it takes 5 seconds to burn 1 mL of standard petrol.

so it will then take 8 seconds to burn 1 mL of high octane petrol.

so, advancing the timing will allow the reaction to begin a little earlier and have enough time to react the octane with the O2 completely

it probly wont be a linear type of reaction (ie. 1 mol. burns, then another, then another).....it will be more like 1 molecule of O2 and octane combusts, and passes of required activation energy to other molecules. it continues to get faster and faster

so.....more octane molecules will take more energy to combust/react but NOTE that: generally, molecules have more energy at higher tempertures

so what RT142 is saying....means that the reaction will just most likely go slower at lower temps. fuel WILL ignite at nearly any temperature but the rate of reaction will vary.

did that make sense??? Confused i **think** that may be right

my theory anyway
