It really depends on what you want to do/see, how you want to stay and how much you want to spend.
My girlfriend and I did 6 weeks in Europe a year and a bit ago pretty comfortably for $10,000 each. We leased a car for almost the whole time we were over there, driving all over italy, spain & france. We stayed in reasonably cheap bed & breakfasts and rarely in hostels. Only ate out nicely a couple of times though as shopping in supermarkets saves a bundle. This could have been done cheaper but we liked having our own room every night and I liked to sample quite a bit of the local ale
Quite a few years ago I took a boarding holiday in Canada. But being single and going with a group of pretty well off people I ended up overspending quite a bit to the tune of about $15,000 for a 5 week trip. It was a blast though
A friend of mine just got back from thailand in which he spent a month or so staying between monastaries and trekking about. He spent his last few nights partying in Bankok, but even then the price is negligible. I can ask him, but I think the total cost of his 6-7week holiday was under $2,000 inc airfares
I'm currently booking a trip for my girlfriend and I to South America in June this year. At the moment including airfares, a couple of week tour, a little bit of skiiing, food etc. I think it's going to cost us about $6,000 each for a month.
It really depends on how you want to do it. If you want to do it on a shoe string then I'm probably not the best person to ask advice off. But if you want to do it fairly cheap, but still comfortable, then I'm sure I can point you in a few decent directions.
Cheers,
Dave
