The first letter of any toyota model number denotes the series of motor (for some, its the first two letters e.g. JZZ30).
The AE71 was the very last of the RWD corolla's (in Australia anyway). Nearly identical in appearance to the KE70, but has a few minor cosmetic differences. As meantioned the engine in a AE71 is a 4A-C and all manual versions came with a 5speed T-50 gearbox. KE70's came with a 4K-C engine and manual versions came with either a K40 (4speed) or K50 (5speed) box. I am unsure of any differences between diffs. I know the KE70 came with a borg warner type diff (nice and easy to weld
All most all parts are directly interchangeable between them, besides the running gear componentry.
