Tuning your car in the driveway without the proper equipment is like trying to play darts blindfolded. Someone with LOTS of experience might be able to get close, but never spot on.
If the car is backfiring and using lots of fuel it's obvious your timing and/or fuel mixtures are way out of whack. The only way to get it right is to take it to a workshop with a wide-band exhaust gas analyser and a chassis dyno. They'll be able to tune it to factory specs and your car will feel like new again.
