Well, I don't really know what your sump looks like, nor how high the drain point is, so I can't really help you on that one.
as a point of reference though, the 1g drain hole sits at the absolute bottom of the block only mm's above where the sump joins the block.
So the oil always flows in, down the side of the block and into the sump.
At a guess though I would imagine that an oil cooler would have to somehow be pressurized to force the oil through the core? so the return point height may not be a crucial part of it's positioning?
