It don't have tappets for starters Smile You have to machine the shims that sit on the buckets - it's a pretty easy job and not expensive and VERY easily done if you are taking the cam out anyway.

My advice for getting the cam timing cover off (seeing as you asked Razz) you need to move the power steering reservoir and return line out of the way - you probably will save yourself some effort if you just remove the reservoir altogether with the return line (moulded rubber hose). Then get the east engine mount out (jack the engine up first, then take out the central bolt, then remove the two nuts underneath) - there are 6 bolts all up I think, and you'll need to be a little dodgy with the ole ring spanner to get the one right next to where the engine mount was, but it should come out easy enough. Once you have all the bolts off (don't forget the one hiding in the recess) you need to tilt the timing cover backwards towards firewall and push it down a bit, once you've managed to get it fairly vertical you should be able to slide it out without too many dramas from the top.

Now - as for your cam specifications Very Happy Well I'd leave that to the experts! The 3S-GE has fairly 'up there' cams to begin with but it doesn't make a great deal of power past 5500 rpm - you are best off getting *expert* advice and it is best if you can get flow data for a gen 1 3S-GE head. It just so happens i have a spare head that I need to get flow-bench tested - so if you are willing to wait a few weeks I should be able to get you some results which will help GREATLY with selecting the right cam for the head.
