Guy,
From my experience yes a car will run with a point coil on an electronic ignition and vise versa. When I put a points coil on my electronic dizzy it ran like s$%t. Some may run ok. You are not talking about a dizzy to coil mismatch, with interchanging between different electronic distributor coils you are talking about a mismatch between ignition modules and coils as these should be match.
I have however found little to no problem in using an electronic coil on a points car did this along time ago but from memory it seemed to work fine. I belive and I could be wrong coils found on electronic dizzy use a weeker signal to break down the primiary coil in a coil. Therfore when you put the point coil on an electronic ignition the signal is often not strong enough to break down the coil and the engine will miss at higher rpms. But it works ok the other way.
So use an electronic coil on the points and you should be fine.
