It sounds like there may be something preventing the fuel flow, like maybe the lift pump (feeding the surge tank) is too small? Could be something floating around in the tank causing trouble OR maybe just the fuel filter has carked it.
Another thing to consider is the coils, if they are getting too hot (like too much dwell or something wrong with their set up OR if they are plain rooted) they will give less spark and this will become progressively worse.
