First thing I would do is get a length of plastic rod or even a welding rod. Pull out a spark plug and drop it on to the piston, turn the motor over by hand marking the highest and lowest points as the rod goes up and down. Measure this distance and you will know which crank you have. Its a start to work out if the previous owner was bullshitting.
