Haha thanks JCMF, damn you must have been bored.  Not a huge difference in first between the W58 and V161, so hopefully it will work out ok. Mind you, I haven't ruled out the possibility of an A series diff conversion...
Draven: I expect retail price would have been around the $3k mark, but obviously that depends how much the box goes for in Japan. I've seen a difference of over $1k in the selling price over there.
What problems am I expecting? Lots of them. 
Shortening the shifter mechanism is an option but Stenno reckons I should leave it be and butcher my transmission tunnel instead. I'll decide that one after taking a few measurements. The tunnel will also need some serious "adjustment" to accomodate the extra width towards the rear of the box... I'm hoping I can do this with a BFH and lots of elbow grease, but I suspect it will be necessary to cut and shut. Once again, we'll have to wait and see.
