kevz0r Regular Location: Perth Registered: May 2002	Re: Tech Info on the 5M-E (MA61) Wed, 05 June 2002 01:41 check the head gasket!! im surprised not more people have said about this, as this is the most common problem I have come across (changed mine I think 4 times now?) Anyway get a CO2 test done for this, any mechanic will do it with a sniffer for about 30 bucks, and is a good quick way to see if the head will need to come off. If you do find the HG is rooted, then get it changed quick before you warp your head. Another thing to check is the steering rack. Almost every mk2 ive come across has the boots on the rack ripped to shreds, which lets sand and crap in there and generally just kills it totally. Mine was about 2k for the car, (not too shabby condition, but with 5ME Auto. ugh). Turbo'd it- crap, but was probably because of the Auto. then went to 5M-GTE Manual for another 2k (less than 1k if you count old stuff I sold). Now it goes a LOT harder, and uses all the old wiring.
