It happens when the suspension shop uses a rattle gun to do up the wheel nuts, and torques them to buggery. Happened to a friend of mine recently, he had to replace all of his wheel studs as a result. Whenever I take my car to a shop that needs to take the wheels off, I make it very clear that they're not to touch my wheel nuts with a rattle gun!
