Id take the second most obvious answer by saying valve shims...

valve shims dont leak oil dude, however valve stem seals do.. Wink

white smoke normaly indicates coolant/water, but smelling of burnt oil you could of seen a light grey/blue smoke?

i've had my turbo burn oil at idle. at idle there is no positive pressure in the turbo housings that would help keep the oil from coming through worn seals, so i would agree with toyrota and the other guy's.
