i think you can remove the switch part on the back of the barrel - that where the problem might be - problems with the barrel are usually indicated by key not turning or very hard to insert.
there's 4/6 screws that hold the shroud onto the steering column, they screw in from underneath. you have to remove the steering wheel first. remove horn covers (screws on back of arms), remove horn (be careful not to shot out horn - often eaier to disconnect battery, then bolt holding onto steering wheel will be visible, undo nut, then use a puller (not a hammer) to pull off the wheel.
once off, it'll be obvious how to attack the switch - from memory it's removable but the barrel housing if fixed to the steering column.
to remove the barrel...i think that you put the key in, put it at accessories then shift a locking pin (i think there's a hole on the barrel you poke somethign into) and then pull the guts of the barrel out with key in place.
