i painted the pipes, and then after the tape was dry, i soaked them with high temp paint.. once it had cured (much smoke later ) they seem to be doing well.
the paint is there to stop the fibres from fraying and being vibrated everywhere..
nope the paint on the pipe will not prevent bad stuff... bad stuff is from a) moisture retention, b) keeping the metal at higher temps, c) etc... unless you want to keep them for a few years, don't worry about it.
yup, i wet mine with a spray thingy.. so was only damp. i'd highly recommend wearing gloves AND a dust mask.. fibres in lungs = always bad.
if this is liek the stuff from autospeed http://www.autospeed.com/shop/category_435/browse. html
then it DOES start to melt at around 5-600 degC.. i stuck it into a 1000deg tube furnace to find out what temp it failed at
