Rex believe the idea for the gap between the pillars and the cage is to sort of isolate the cage from any initial impact.

Imagine...

BANG!!!

The car takes a whack on the side around, mmmm, say the b-pillar.

If the cage is against the pillar then it too will buckle from the initial impact, Not to mention stopping quicker and upping the decelleration force.

Whereas if the cage is a given distance then the impact is dispersed over time given the greater distance in can absorb the impact over so 1 the cage see's less force and is not not damaged by the first impact

If yer get what Rex means
