Rex is right, hence the 1/2" gap which i was advocating. As far as i know it the main reason that a lot of rally cars have the A pillars stitched to the cage is because the stitch plate has a LARGE part to play in keeping the A pillar from buckling if you hit a tree with it. Due to the plate being mostly perpindicular to the pillar the stress is spread out across the plate, and then finally across the cage itself.

It is somewhat different for track use.
