Well my 86 went through rego on Tuesday without nary a mention of the cage. The only reference to it was "Has to be a two seater because it has a cage" thats all (i thought the complete lack of rear seat, seatbelts or anything back there would have given that one away).
I am led to believe that one of the reasons they dont like people trundling around on the road with cages is that the damage caused to non caged cars is exponentially larger due to diminshed crumple zones. That and a good cage can make it very hard for SES to cut you out, and actually have a higher head injury rate due to the lack of a helmet (when on the road), and prominence of large metal bars.
