this is what is happening right now in USA, 2 competitions, putting on events on the same day in the same area...

Formula Drift and the World Drift Championship

see thread alex pfiffer made @ drifting.com forums here

in aus, it can be seen as a good thing and a bad thing.

good being that DA is injecting money and publicity into our sport, and lots of it. they have also made the move into television coverage. this can only ever be seen as a good thing. fullstop. they are running a 'exhibition' event with set competitors rather than a 'entrant' style event such as DN.

its the D1 equivalent in aussie drift. only the best who are seeded through by local competition into the 'pro' series. this said, there is no governing body who gets to say whos pro and whos not. they are choosing it by previous wins in DN and only choosing certain amoutns of each car model and i suspect another variable in the selection process is who 'their mates are' and 'what they can bring' to the series... i the way of money and contacts. after all primarily its business to them, not the forward progression of the sport.

that said DN has got the grassroots level and the 'factory' level which is training up drivers and giving them a foot in the door into drift. this allows a 'feeding' effect from being a noob with no factory association to be 'picked up' by a factory and sponsored: thus moving into fatory class. then as they progress and get even bigger and better skills the pros in the factory class then move to higher levels of competition, ie. DA series (in theory).

This is all good, but with the sport in such an infancy in aust, putting events on that take away aust's best drifters from a national competiton they are expected (by the fans) to enter in are not there. people are going to feel 'ripped off' when they dont get a decent show.

the only problem i can see with the introduction of DA into the big picture is the staging of events on the same day. If DA want to make the sport bigger and therefore make more money in the long run, then they should get competitons organised between each other for seperate dates. and also organise a governing body to identify a progression from DN (G1) to DA (D1). if they dont form together it just wont work.

for the drift associations:
more 'pro' competitors = more spectators = more money.

for the drivers:
more exposure = more money for sponsors = therefore more parts/funds the drivers = better progression in skill = more money/success

pretty simple really.
