Not the point... point is that I don't have that kind of cash right now to throw at it.

No, thats the WHOLE point.
If you have spent, lets say $5000 on building the motor, then whats another $400-$600?
If you don't have the money, the solution is simple, either borrow it, OR DON'T DRIVE THE CAR TILL YOU CAN AFFORD TO TUNE IT.
The LAST thing you want is to give the car a couple of quick squirts thinking that you will be safe, only to find out that it is running lean in a few spots and you have inadvertedly cooked a couple of piston/valves/ring/whathaveyou.
Think about it.
