Not sure about the GTI diameter, i was going by the article on twincam.org. I have a late model GTI and will measure them on the weeekend. I agree with the heat transfer. I am saying that due to the hassel it possibly easier to just add the twin piston calipers and not bother with the extra 3mm thickness. Espicially on a street car.
