I used to have a 13B turbo RX4.
when i first got it, it had some little stock rx7 BOVs that evidently did not work very well, if at all. those BOVs made that echo sound.
after about 1 month of owning the RX4 i had a Turbosmart v-port BOV fitted, when i picked up my car from the exhaust shop i was surprised at how effective it was! my car used to give a little squeak into second gear under hard throttle, but with the bov, it bagged hard into second and chirped third.
i talked to my mechanic, (Rotary Performance Center) and they told me it was because i had small diameter intercooler pipes, (about 2.5 inch i think) and the pressure bouncing back off the closed throttle would have been pretty harsh without a BOV, and would have slowed the compressor down considerably, meaning the engine has to build boost again after each time the throttle is shut,ie gear shifts.
basically, the BOV allowed my car to get back on boost almost immediately after a shift, this equals little-to-no lag into the next gear.
but I'm not sure about it being bad for a turbo, i spose if the turbo has to do more spooling it would have a harder life and wear out quicker.
Plus, BOVs are great for letting out a TSHHH next to the open window of a V8 falcodore to bait them for a race!
