Fitting an intercooler involves more than just bending a few pipes - 90deg 2.5" silicon bends cost about $70 each - add 3 of them and $210 is gone. Now figure that a hybrid cooler form autobarn will be in the $600 (an HKS intercooler will cost you over 2K, or in the case of my cooler figure $480 core only and add hand beaten end tanks). Your engine conversion dude will send someone out to pick it up, then they will get it back, remove front bar and grille, manufacture brackets to suit. Sit the cooler in place, determine pipe paths and make any necessary ports in body work. Then fire up the tig welder and weld up an aluminium donut or two, measure and cut some aluminium pipe (about $100/6.5 length incl. delivery), cut bends from the donut (where needed) and sit down at the welding bench and stitch it together. Fit all of the bits to car and re-fit bar (which now needs some cutting with the air saw) and presto.
Approx cost now?
- IC = $600
- Silicone joiners and hose clamps = $250 (to be conservative)
- Materials = $200 (conservative)
- Labour (NOT incl picking up parts) = $540 (6hrs @ $90/hr)
Total - $1590 and that's for a cheap intercooler!
As for your engine cost - does the conversion dude go and get it for you for free, and pass it on at cost because you are good mates and go way back???? I think not. Also figure, parts on the engine are invariably broken OR do not interface with the chosen EFI system.
Stick to doing whatever it is that you do - because I can tell in a heartbeat that you do NOT work for a car modifying shop.
