LSD's lock when you put drive into them. the rear wheels are NOT turning together at all times, only when it is most benefitial. when you weld a diff they constantly turn together meaning that when you are doing tight turns they have to do the same turning circle. imagine you were driving in a circle (not spinning wheels). if the wheels are rotating separately (as in an LSD or open diff) they are travelling in 2 different diameter circles (ie. the wheel on the inside of the circle traces a shorter path than wheel on outside). when you have a welded diff in the same situation the 2 wheels are forced to make the same diameter circle, which unfortunately has to be the bigger circle (chain only as strong as weakest link idea) basically when the diff is welded, when turning, BOTH of the wheels have to trace the path of the bigger diameter circle. meaning that your turning circle is increased (you cant do tight turns). well, thats how i try to explain it. hopefully you can understand.
