note: different states have differing rules on defecting.
Am sure that in Qld, if you don't fix up the defects and get them inspected within the period stated on the notice is illegal to continue to drive your car (e.g. it is unroadworthy after the 'fix the shit up' period has passed).
The rego is effectively cancelled (as it's been declared 'unroadworthy' which voids your CTP insurance) between the expiry date of the defect notice and the time at which it is inspected and declared roadworthy.
