well hello all
being a qualified a/c fitter i may be able to help.
the old gas r12 works better on the old system cos they are made to accommodate for that gas, when the new gas is installed the latent heat of vaporisation of the gas is different which means the the heat(chilled air)taken out of the gas and put into the car as cooled air is allot less. if you were to changed the evaporator inside the car to a bigger one then u would have allot colder air.
as for being illegal well yes but no. Aircraft still use this old r12 gas for their a/c systems and large commercial aircraft use it in the cargo's as a fire extinguisher. the gas is still available but only to people with correct qualifications. the only way for an automotive dealer to obtain r12 is by evacuating an old system before converting it to the new one and storing it. r12 is ozone depleting so it should not be let out into the atmosphere.
now for replacing parts. a new receiver dryer (the round thing at the front with a sight glass) should be fitted as inside the drier is a coalescent which removes water vapor from the system. water in the system can freeze the thermal expansion valve.
to replace the gas the system should be completely evacuated to save the gas. then parts changed. if you want to remain on the old gas then only the drier needs to be changed and you need to find someone who has r12 gas and is willing to do it. if you are going to convert to r134a then the drier, thermal expansion valve, and the valves for putting the gas in need to be changed as the valves are different so as to stop putting the 2 gasses together. a new gas is now available which will mix with the r12 but is very expensive.
hope this has helped abit.
