For MSN 7: Go to Tools > Options > Connection > Test Connection -- and allow it to select the best connection for you. Maybe you're not allowing yourself to be directly connected? Tools > Options > Security > Check the "Allow me to connect directly to my contacts when sending messages" [Report message to a moderator]
