If you ran the tank dry, there's a good chance your fuel filter is blocked since it woud have sucked up all the crap at the bottom of your tank.

Change the filter and see if this makes any difference - it won't cost much and might be the answer to your problem! If it is the cause it would certainly fit in with what your mechanic is saying about fuel not making it to the engine.
