A distinction needs to be made between trim paints that are in effect dyes and other paints that are enamel based. In cars they use different types of plastics and finishes and the dye types will come off them like an thin layer of ash. For a quick guide: ABS plastic - you can use a vinyl dye or trim dye type paint as the paint will penetrate this type of plastic PP (Polypropolene) platic - you will need to use a flexible primer or flexible additive in the paint you use so that it will stick to the plastic and also bend with the plastic. You could use like a hobby paint but that will be expensive and it is hard to find them in semi gloss. The good thing about Toyotas is that they mark the plastic components in most cases with what type of plastic they are made from.
