found some pics of my conversion of power steering into RA40 celica....thought some people may be interested.
the steering box is from a MX62 cressida
ra40 pitman arm goes straight onto the cressida box
MX62 steering box bolts straight in....im not sure if RA23/28 use same bolt pattern for steering box
only main problem is the box is longer....ie sits further up towards steering wheel.
one way to reduce this difference is to undo the bolt that clamps the rubber flange thing (i dont know what its called; some one fill me in) to the spline on the mx62 box. then slide the flange down as far as it goes (away from steering wheel)
by doing that, the extra length can be reduced from ~15 to ~7 mm.
to get that 7mm down to normal there is 2 methods (i only tried one so far)
#1. machine 7mm off the "shoulder" of the steering shaft at the top. this allows the shaft to slide upwards ~7mm through the top bearing. only down side of this is that the steering wheel will be sitting 7mm further back towards you face. Another problem is that the horn wire will not reach the steering wheel anymore. and; the 3rd problem is that the steering lock will not work anymore; milling another groove would probly solve this preoblem
#2. when i had the steerin shaft out, (after i machined it already ) i noticed it is 2 pieces. one "oval" tube inside another "oval" ttube. it also has two nylon locating pins which determine the correct length. This method has been tried and aparently works fine. Anyway, my theory; if you drill out the two locating pins, slide the two oval tubes together (~7mm; i cant remeber exact length) then re drill two holes and put 2 new locating pins in, this would take away the problem of the horn/s.lock/sitting further back.
anyway i got the p.steering working in my "test" RA40 (using method #1).....it worked well.
personally though; i dont really think an ra40/23/28 needs power steering....they are light enough. once the tie rod ends are replaced they turn pretty bloody easy.
thought i would just share this though
PS: the exact measurements i cant remeber and you would have to go on your own project's requirements
here is the pics
