I dont know that there is a 'cheap' swap for the turbo, depending what your definition of cheap is.
The stock turbo would be way past its limit at 24psi, making more heat than useful boost pressure.
Several people have fitted either the supra CT26 turbo, or made an adaptor plate to fit a garrett T25/28/03. Either way, you will have to make new oil feed & return lines, water lines, dump pipe, and possibly intake plumbing.
As for the question about how many pistons have you broken?
Me = 3 two on 14psi, the other on 12psi. The factory pistons are weak, but more than that, the OEM computer does not handle extra boost very well, and the lack of an intercooler is a MAJOR downfall, both contributing to detonation which is what breaks the ring lands.
