that smell could also be caused by the vented petrol cap....see if u can find where the smell is originating, if its around the cap and u cant see any visible signs of a leak then i would say there is no leak.

with regards to the question in general a service would be a wise course of action.

new plugs leads cap etc if necessary,
compression test the motor
do your timing
replace filters
check sensors with multimeter according to your manual

with those basics out of the way you will be in a much better position to determine if its a sensor or mechanical fault.
