Yeah I have had a similar problem, a ticking noise from within the dash that I have traced to being the speedo cable. Mine's pretty erratic, some days it ticks and others its quiet. I actually took my instrument cluster out and drove the car around a bit and could definitely see and hear that it was the speedo cable and when I put my finger on it I could feel the clicking too.
I put some spray lube on mine, made a small difference but didn't eliminate the noise. When I do my engine/gearbox swap I'll just get another one and put up with it in the meantime....
