nah, i wouldnt get an ipod, rather any other brand like creative or something
anyway, ive got a generic 512mb mp3 player (+ storage of course) and it's great. nice and small, not chunky like ipod-type things, but still fit about 100 songs. but you'd definitely need some decent headphones, not those crappy earphone things, no bass out of them 
ive got sennheiser px200's, they rock. they're not full headphones, but they're really good for portability, just fold up into a case that can fit into your pocket  i think they're about $130
also, mp3 direct is really cheap for these type of things
