There are five generations of the 3S-GE...
Gen1 is 91 octane, 135hp... they're pretty old (1986 - 1990) so they'll have quite a few km's on the clock too... These should be fairly cheap.
Gen2 is 96 octane, 156hp... the 9.75:1 compression ratio and good powerband makes these a nice buy. 1990-1993 I'd say around $1200 for the engine..
Gen3 is probably the best you can get for your money... 98 octane, 173hp, 10.5:1 compression ratio... Very strong midrange. Around $1350 for the engine, $4500 for the halfcut
Gen4 is hard to find, and not really worth it... it is detuned for the US market, to comply with anti smog stuff... one advantage of this engine is oil squirters in the bottom end.
Gen5, the latest and greatest, is a 98 octane, 205 hp, 8500rpm redline beast. It's fitted to Altezza/LS200 with a 6 Speed gearbox, RWD configuration. They have Excellent EFI, VVTi, and much more advanced materials for the components. Expect to pay around $8000 for the engine, $12000 for the halfcut.
