I drilled a hole in the pipe just after the filter and used silicone to glue it in. Without the silicone it tended to fall out easily... was quite happily measuring the temp of my transmission (and making the engine feel sluggish) for a few days. Confused

Its unlikely to get wet in your engine bay. You wont need cut up your airbox, the sensor should just unclip and pop out.
