Dave, I think not having the voltage at a nominal 13.5 volts (due to no alternator) could be causing all sorts of problems from poor spark to insufficient fuel pressure. As with most conversion problems it is difficult to say exactly what the cause may be. As you have already eliminated other potential problems such as fuel surge and alike I suggest the alternator is the next step.

By the way, Tim sent me some photos of the zoom shoot. Should make for a great read.
