im assuming that the car is injected so ill work from there. heres a few things it could be.
-leak in the induction pipe, ie anywhere between the throttle body and airbox.
-clogged or damaged etc vacuum hoses. ie the ones that run from the throttle body to the airbox or whatever.
-timing? - if the car runs fine then i doubt it will be this and especially if the mechanic said its fine.
-could be leads as prev mentioned
-clogged air filter element

if the vacuum hoses are damaged in any way or the induction pipe has a hole in it or is leaking even at the clamps then the sensors in the pipe or airbox will not be getting correct readings on air temp and flow etc hence the computer getting wrong readings and not idling properly. if the vacuum hoses are damaged then the engine wont be getting enough air at idle hence its stalling

if all that turns out alright then maybe its just the idle screw

hope that helps. leigh
