If you can get it cheap go for it i say

The better model to go for would be either the TE or TF cause of the Radial Tuned Suspension (RTS) which the early models didn't have. But either way the early models aren't too bad even if they do miss out on the suspension tweaks.
Engine work - If you can, start with a G180 block, use an early G160 head and adapt a weber from either the ford cortina or escort (it'll be an idea to get it rejetted too). The standard exhaust header isn't to bad but swapping it for extractors would be a good thing. 2" exhaust (see about increasing the size to 2.25" for the bend that goes over the diff) with a resonator and either a dog-leg muffler, or a straight-through muffler (depending on how you like the noise).
It'd be an idea to upgrade to the 5 speed gearbox but from what i know the 5 speed isn't as common as the 4 speed. But apart from that, parts for them is as common as pigeon poo in a city central park and just as cheap.
