Yeah man, I did the exact same thing. It's one of those do now, worry about it later things.
After a while of putting up with no traffic reports etc, I ended up wiring up this little almost rotor shaped flat little antenna thing and fed it up above the roof lining & stuck it to the roof.
The reception is heaps good now, just as good as when I had the standard external one.
I'm pretty sure you can get these things in dickies or tandy, just make sure it says it's for AM & FM as well as uhf & all that & it should work fine.
